Novel 3D Printer

I co-led the Space Manufacturing mission at the Columbia Space Initiative. Space Manufacturing is exploring and developing new methods to enable the next generation of self-reliant off earth missions. Our goal is to reduce the frequency—and eventually—the need for resupply missions, to make life off the planet truly independent. We are particularly interested in using additive manufacturing and on planet resources to manufacture.

We designed and built a novel FDM 3D printer and machined it completely in-house. ​We also worked on designing and building a SCARA arm printer.

A particular challenge was integrating open source hardware and manufacturing our own hardware in the makerspace.
